Report: Tottenham, Newcastle connected to AS Roma’s £25M defender

Tottenham Hotspur hopes to improve their backline this summer as they’re linked to various defenders, but the north London club is broadening its search for a central defender.

The latest name to surface is AS Roma defender Roger Ibañez. According to Calciomercato, the 23-year-old is a player they’re open to selling this summer transfer window, but only if a club meets their asking price.

Roma reportedly wants €30-million (£25-million) for the Brazil international, who is under contract until 2025. Last season, Ibañez scored four goals during 51 appearances, playing 85-percent of Roma’s matches during the 2021-22 season.

Spurs aren’t the only Premier League club eyeing the Roma defender, as Newcastle United is also in on the defender. The Magpies are looking to splurge with their new ownership and improve the squad that can challenge for the top four and silverware.

Nonetheless, if Ibañez is indeed the target for Tottenham, they could use the allure of playing UEFA Champions League football next season to tip the scale in their favor.
