Premier League club are eyeing an ‘ambitious’ move for Mauricio Pochettino

Aston Villa are eyeing an ‘ambitious’ move for former Spurs and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino if they sack Steven Gerrard.

His five-and-a-half-year tenure at Spurs is widely regarded as a success, as he transformed the club into a strong side that consistently competed for the top four. He also led them to their first-ever Champions League final, which they lost 1-0 to Liverpool. Spurs also challenged for the title twice in that period.

The 50-year-old has been unemployed since being relieved from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season, and he is now regarded as Villa’s top target.

According to the Telegraph, Steven Gerrard has been given two more games to save his job, with the club facing Fulham and Brentford in the space of a few days.

The report has stated that Mauricio Pochettino is ‘the first man Villa will turn to’ if Gerrard is sacked. It also adds that the club will be willing to ‘wait for’ the Argentinian in case he shows interest in the job but is reluctant to take on the role ‘immediately’. The report adds that if Pochettino refuses, the club’s owners will turn to Thomas Tuchel and Unai Emery.

Villa’s owners are extremely ambitious, and Pochettino may believe he can have the same transformative effect on the club that he did at Tottenham. However, given the Argentine’s current standing in his game, it might make sense for him to wait for a bigger job, such as the Juventus one, to open up.
