The Daily Mail understands that we will sell the 26-year-old this summer, if he does not sign an extension to his contract, which expires in 2021.
The report adds that there are reservations on Dier’s side too as he is reluctant to commit to the club because of concerns over his playing time.
This suggests a mutual interest in Dier moving on at the end of the season, but it won’t be as easy as it sounds.
Daniel Levy isn’t going to accept small change for the 40-cap England international, and Dier might not have loads of attractive offers based on the last 18 months.
The utilty man was given the opportunity of a renaissance at the start of Jose Mourinho’s reign, but could not keep his place in the team for long due to form and fitness.
Dier was once a fixture in the lineup, whether in midfield or defence, but has not started any of our last eight Premier League matches. We now have better options in both areas.
There aren’t going to be big clubs queuing up to sign him for big money and he could decide to wait it out.
After Eriksen and Danny Rose, it would be another sad end to a Spurs career which peaked a few years ago. But it can’t be as painstaking. It can’t drag on. It can’t cost us more money.
