Not One European Super League, But Two

Martin Lipton for Sun online understands that the European Super League is far from a dead duck. Plans are now underway for a 40 club break away from existing league structures, and a number of additional concessions have also been suggested, which may soften those that don’t have entirely closed minds to the idea.

Instead of the initial proposal of one Super League, there would be two leagues of 20 sides. Free travel for away fans is another concession, along with tickets for the final being offered within the lowest price band. All of which suggests to me that this is very much a broadcast rights-driven project.

With funding estimated to be in the region of some £4.6 billion, and so many sides in economic free-fall, it is time for those reacting to the Super League with disdain to contemplate the future.

It’s the 21st century, and those peddling the line that this is some evil idea clearly would prefer to Spurs play West Brom and Norwich twice a season, as opposed to Real Madrid and Barcelona.
