Monday’s Rumour Hoover feat. Mssrs Cavani & Piatek

Plausible Tottenham transfer targets are thin on the ground this month. No better example perhaps than this business with Edinson Cavani. What appears to be genuine here is that the player has, according to Sky Sports, requested to exit Paris Saint Germain.

However, The Guardian casually threw out a line about Spurs being interested in the now 33-year-old due to Harry Kane’s guaranteed absence, and suddenly we have a catalyst for many outlets prescribing this as an actual bona fide rumour.

It was suggested by Calciomercato last June that PSG were offering Edinson €10million pa (including bonuses) to stay, and so it seems ambitious to believe that Daniel Levy would offer the Uruguayan parity with Kane, ‘just like that’.

My guess, is that Mr Cavani will head for Juventus.

Krzysztof Piatek is another one linked to Spurs, and this rumour has more substance than others.

The bad news is uncompromisingly listed in The Daily Mail, who walk us through all the reasons we need the boy, but then reveal that talks with AC Milan have stalled.

With Tottenham, there is considerable form for brinkmanship in these matters and I wouldn’t start considering any rumour too seriously, until at least Christian Eriksen is thanked and wished well on Spurs’ website.

January’s windows are notoriously difficult, but we are here by our own making. As per the article in the Mail, our woes are not solely centred around Harry Kane.

Without at least one, preferably two good signings, then Mourinho will be lucky to qualify for any European competition.

Europe, where Tottenham would be expected to score goals against teams vastly superior to Watford.
