John Barnes’ Words Of Wisdom On The Harry Kane Rumours Are Off Beam [opinion]

Despite Harry Kane being only a few years into a six-year contract, the rumour mill has already begun linking the Englishman with moves out London. The main driver, of course, is the absence of trophies in an otherwise decent career at Tottenham.

Former Liverpool and England ace John Barnes – ably assisted by a betting company’s agenda – has wandered into the debate and via The Sun newspaper advised Harry Kane not to walk away from Spurs.

Curiously, Barnes references the former Manchester United ace Bryan Robson as an example of the merits of sticking with the side you support.

“Very similar with Bryan Robson at Manchester United. United and England captain at the time, whilst United were not doing well, he could have easily left.

Except this isn’t a particularly accurate account of Robson’s career at Old Trafford. Where ‘Captain Marvel’ won a shedload of honours and became a household name in English football.

Equally, Barnes’ kind sentiments ignore the fundamental differences between the business models at Manchester United then, and Tottenham now. Alex Ferguson built a dynasty of footballing achievement, whereas Daniel Levy is building a soul harvesting device that boasts the longest bar and the largest retail space of any European club.

Who knows what Harry Kane will decide to do, but if it’s silverwear he’s after, and he’s planning to stay at Spurs, he better get himself down to Asprey in Bond Street.
