A “surprised” Kevin Phillips thinks he knows why Spurs want this player

Kevin Phillips has discussed the latest report linking Tottenham with a move for Jordan Pickford as a replacement for Hugo Lloris.

The Frenchman isn’t getting any younger, and The Telegraph claims Antonio Conte wants to replace him in goal with the England number one.

Former Sunderland man Phillips says Conte is targeting Pickford because of his distribution.

But he insists that Spurs should give Lloris one more season at the Tottenham Stadium.

Phillips tells Football Insider: “I think Conte wants Jordan because of his distribution.

“It’s exceptional at times. He can ping it with that left foot and drop it straight into centre-forwards. There is no issues with that.

“I am surprised though, if I’m being honest. Why would you not do everything to keep Lloris? At least for another season.

“If they are going to go for someone else, Jordan Pickford is proven at the top level. He is England’s number one. He is a quality goalkeeper.

“As I say, I think his distribution is the reason why Conte wants him.”

The Boy Hotspur Says

Replacing Lloris with Pickford will ensure Spurs continues to have an assured hand as their first choice.

The former Sunderland man has proven he is one of the best in Europe with his international performances.

However, Spurs might struggle to get Everton to sell him.

Keeping Lloris for one more campaign, as Phillips has suggested, wouldn’t be a bad idea in that case.
