Spurs emerge as contenders to sign experienced Serie A attacker

Tottenham has emerged as one of the teams looking to sign Napoli attacker, Dries Mertens.

The Belgian is one of Europe’s most recognisable goal-scorers and has broken Diego Maradona’s goal-scoring record at Napoli.

He was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League last summer when it appeared that he would leave Serie A.

He eventually signed a two-year deal with Napoli late on and his suitors moved on.

His new deal made him one of the highest earners at the club and that wage now appears to be a burden for them and Voetbal24 via Sport Witness says they want to cash in on him.

This has opened the door for him to move to the Premier League and the report says Spurs are battling Arsenal and Chelsea for his signature.

The Lilywhites face a summer fraught with a lot of uncertainty about the future of Harry Kane.

The England striker could leave Spurs finally and they will need a replacement to fill the void that he will leave behind.

Mertens has been linked as one striker who Jose Mourinho may consider as a suitable replacement.

With just a year left on his deal in Italy, it is likely that the 33-year-old would be available for a fairly low fee.
