Pep Guardiola says he wasn’t disappointed after failed transfer pursuit of Harry Kane

Over the summer, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane was linked to a move to Manchester City. Despite the rumors, the 28-year-old didn’t depart the north London club, and manager Pep Guardiola isn’t disappointed that they missed out on the England international.

Manchester City has compiled 98 goals without a striker in the squad and opened a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

“I never was, in my 11 or 12 years, disappointed in what the club cannot do in the transfer market,” Guardiola said, per ESPN. “I’ve never created a fire here because I represent the club, and the club is always beyond myself by far.”

“We tried [to sign Kane], but it was far away to be done because Tottenham was clear this is not going to happen. And when it happens two, three, four times, it’s over.

“Now you can say ‘Harry Kane didn’t come and everything is going well,’ but at the time, I didn’t know it. When we lost to Spurs and Leicester in the Community Shield. And I don’t know what will happen in the next few weeks.”

With the lack of a conventional No.9, Guardiola has used Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, and others as the center-forward in his 4-3-3 system. If Manchester City doesn’t add a striker, Guardiola is willing to adapt once more for his squad.

Meanwhile, over the past few weeks, Kane’s name has begun ringing with the other Manchester-based club, Manchester United. The Red Devils are reportedly keen on hiring former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino once the 2021-22 season ends.

As a result, Pochettino could be looking to reunite with his former player at Old Trafford. Nonetheless, if Tottenham fails to finish in the top four, a new batch of Kane rumors could be coming this summer.
