The last Champions League was concluded in an unusual manner due to COVID-19 and that format might be returned from the 2024 season.
The coronavirus pandemic forced the Champions League and other European competitions to be played in one city from the quarterfinals.
The games were also one-legged and it seems that UEFA got a positive response from fans.
The “Final Eight” will now be reconsidered in 2024. This is because they are obligated to return to the normal format for now due to the deals that they have signed with broadcasters.
Giorgio Marchetti, UEFA’s deputy general secretary, told the PA news agency via Mirror Football: “A good rule is to never exclude something which proves valuable or has potential.
“We know there are many elements that need to be taken into account, such as calendar and organisational constraints, fans’ involvement, economic implications, but we will for sure study this format and its variations for our upcoming discussions.
“Single knock-out matches obviously favour uncertainty and emotions.
“We received great feedback from clubs, broadcasters and other partners as well as from the fans. The circumstances made this format a must, but the result could not be better as well as the degree of satisfaction.”
Spurs have enjoyed the one-legged format of European football this season, winning all their qualifying games.
It is a format that could benefit Spurs when they go up against the traditional giants of European football.
