Latest: Huge blow for Spurs ahead of Liverpool game as first team star ruled out with a serious injury

Tottenham Hotspur have received a potentially devastating injury blow in the form of Son Heung-min.

Assistant manager Cristian Stellini revealed that the forward, who was withdrawn in the first half after a clash of heads with Chancel Mbemba, may have suffered a concussion at the Orange Vélodrome during the post-match press conference following Spurs’ victory over Olympique de Marseille last night (via the Evening Standard).

Regarding Son’s injury, Stellini said:

“In this moment, we don’t know [the extent of Son’s injury]. We have to wait for a medical assessment, and we have to wait until tomorrow [Wednesday].

“Sonny feels better now. I saw him in the dressing room. He celebrated with us. So we will wait for tomorrow. We are not sure [if he was concussed]. It is his face. His eye is a bit swollen.”

Spurs have now confirmed that the South Korean has a fractured eye socket and will require facial surgery. The statement from Spurs official website said:

We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye.

The South Korea international suffered the injury during the first half of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League victory at Olympique Marseille.

Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course.

The club has not mentioned a timeline as to when he could be expected back playing but according to the initial reports, he is a major doubt for the World Cup now.

This is a huge blow for Antonio Conte with the Italian already short of attacking options with Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski both out injured as well.

Their next match is against Liverpool who have had a turbulent season of their own but this news will serve as a potential boost for them.
