“Would be a good fit” – Tottenham legend names the striker who would be perfect for Tottenham

Tottenham are actively seeking a top centre-forward in this transfer window.

Spurs legend Teddy Sheringham has suggested that the club should prioritize signing Ivan Toney this summer.

The former English forward believes that Toney’s presence as a central striker would enable other attackers to thrive.

Toney, who is in the final year of his contract with Brentford set to expire next June, is a likely candidate for a move this summer. He has been part of England’s squad for the ongoing European Championship and has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time.

In the 2022-23 Premier League season, Toney scored 20 goals in 33 appearances, making him the third-highest scorer in the division, trailing only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

In a discussion with Poker Sites, Teddy Sheringham emphasised that Spurs need a reliable goalscorer to lead their attack.

He pointed out that the club captain Son Heung-min, while talented, is more effective playing off a main number 9, similar to his dynamic with Harry Kane in previous seasons. Additionally, James Maddison would benefit from having a focal point in the attack.

Sheringham highlighted Toney’s qualities, noting his leadership and ability to trouble the opposition defenders.

The 28-year-old has consistently performed well for Brentford, demonstrating his capabilities as a top striker in the English top flight.

As quoted by Spurs Web, Sheringham remarked:

“Tottenham need a centre-forward. They need a goalscorer – they can’t keep putting Heung-min Son up there because he’s not a proper striker, he’s a man who plays off a striker like he used to do with Harry Kane. James Maddison needs a focal point to play off as well.

“I think Ivan Toney would be a good fit for Tottenham – he could probably go to any of Chelsea, Arsenal or Tottenham.

“I’d like to see Spurs get him, because he’s got the leadership qualities of a number nine that would be very important for any of those teams. He leads the line so well for Brentford and always troubles his marker.”

Given that Brentford would prefer to sell Toney now rather than risk losing him for free next year, this summer presents a prime opportunity for Spurs to secure his signature.
