The January transfer window closes in less than two weeks, and Tottenham Hotspur has yet to make a move to improve their squad.
The north London club fights for a top-four spot, and manager Antonio Conte wants improvements to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League next season.
During his press conference with the media, the Italian tactician shared some frustration about the lack of moves thus far in the January transfer window.
“I know that the transfer window in January is always very difficult, and it is more simple when you start the season to buy important players,” Conte said, per The Athletic. “In January, it is not easy, but at the same time, we know very well that if there is the opportunity and also if it’s not the best opportunity, but we need to do something.”
“Also, if I repeat that this could not be the best opportunity, but I think that we are in a situation where we have to try to improve the squad because the squad is not so big.”
Over the past few weeks, Tottenham has been linked to various players, but no moves have occurred. With only days left, Spurs need to get the ball rolling on improving their squad, especially with rumors of Conte leaving if they don’t hold their end of the bargain.
Conte isn’t afraid to depart a club that doesn’t commit to him financially, as, over the summer, he left Inter Milan despite winning the Serie A after the club wanted to cut player wages.
He sounds like Poch in his final days
Spot on. There’s also the issue of getting that 4th spot. Levy’s strategy seems to be “spend less now, pay more later”
I think more needs to be made clear about so called “free” transfers.
To be clear the transfer isn’t “free”. You don’t pay a transfer fee to the club or consortium holding the players rights but you do pay significantly higher wages, a signing on fee and significant agent fees.
Free transfers are actually bad for football in general. Instead of that transfer fee being reinvested into the purchase of more players the monies paid go out of the game and into the pockets of players and agents.
To suggest that Levy is wise to wait until the transfer fee is zero is not entirely correct. The buying of the player will be cheaper but it’s not free and the long term impact for football clubs will be significant and negative. Players and agents will get richer whilst football clubs loose money on their assets.
His reasoning will be I can get him for free in the summer…😏
Wolves manager now doesn’t want Traore sold. He’s done a U-turn. Levy has taken too long as usual. What a transfer dunce.
We should be after players like Fabio Carvalho of Fulham IMO the reason why they have scored at least 6 goals in 3 successive matches, and we are crying out for someone like him. Naturally LF, MU, CFC, RM, BM are all looking at him. But not us. Even our youth scouting stinks compared to the clubs above us who grab our best coaches as they pay better.
If Levy actually had a clue about his job, we would have ALL transfers completed by now (with the work all done before the window). But no!
Last minute Levy has to play his bargaining barrow game.
It will never change whil a property developer pretends to run a football club.
I don’t get this more difficult bs it’s more accurate to say January cost more as you have to make it worth clubs partimg with players but with people like kesse on contract which is running out opportunity is there just levy once again his unwilling to pay a penny more than his in own undervaluation of a player is the issue
I hope he walks, more egg on blades face!
