“We need to be playing above that” – Eric Dier comments on playing in the Conference League

Tottenham Hotspur is playing in Europe this season; however, it’s a competition that, if it were to Eric Dier, wouldn’t like to be part of for any much longer if he had a say.

Mirror relayed the comments made by the 27-year-old, who stated that playing in the UEFA Conference League is beneath them. After reaching the Champions League final two years ago, it does seem like a fall from grace for the players on that squad.

“We need to be challenging for European football. There has to be European football in this stadium. With no disrespect to the Conference League, we need to be playing above that. That’s what we should be striving towards,” Dier said.

Dier likely refers to Champions League being played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when stating that European football. The task is to finish at least in the top four this season, and 2021-22 started on the right foot.

However, Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad did endure a three-match losing streak that they snapped against Aston Villa. Now Spurs will look to get back on track as they only sit two points from a top-four spot.

If they’re going to avoid finishing outside, they’ll need to prevent further losing streaks.
