Timo Werner has given Tottenham an early lead against Manchester City in the League Cup Round of 16 match.

The goal came from a fantastic counterattack from Spurs after some lovely play down the right-hand side.

The move started with some slick play down Tottenham’s right flank. A quick break saw the ball reach Dejan Kulusevski, who floated an inch-perfect pass into the box, picking out Werner in the heart of the penalty area.

The former Chelsea man made no mistake this time, powering his shot into the back of the net to put Spurs in front.

Watch the goal below:

It’s a superb finish from the German, who has had his fair share of critics. Werner has had a disappointing season so far, having failed to impress when called upon by Ange Postecoglou.

He has missed a number of easy chances this season, including two one-on-one opportunities against Manchester United, which resulted in frustrated fans calling on for him to be replaced by 17-year-old Mikey Moore. He also missed a few against Ferencvaros in the Europa League.

However, there will be hope that this goal can be the turning point for his confidence in front of goal, as Spurs will need all the firepower available in the coming weeks.

With Heung-min Son and Wilson Odobert both out injured, Ange will rely on Werner to step on the left-hand side of the attack.

Timo Werner: Future at Tottenham remains uncertain

Werner’s long-term future at the club remains uncertain. The club extended his loan spell by a year, and they have an option to buy him on a permanent deal in the summer.

However, recent reports have suggested that the club will not be interested in a permanent move. In fact, it has been reported that the player himself could look to cut his loan spell short in January and the club will not come in his way.
