Video/Analysis: What Sort Of A Game Did Giovani Lo Celso Have Against Newcastle?

Pictures c/o Sky Sports

Total actions / successful

Lo Celso’s total successful actions in this game were better than his current average of 68.3% so, at 72%, we can see that Gio is seeing more of the ball and is more proficient with it.

We get a further sense of this when looking at Gio’s passing which again was marginally better than his current mean average.

I’ve seen numerous disparaging remarks about Lo Celso inline, and this clip tells me that he’s actually precisely the type of footballer that anyone in their right mind would want in their team.

Yep. Too many players whose strengths don’t make up for their weaknesses.

Reminds me of when we had a midfield of Huddlestone, Jenas and Palacios when what we needed was a player with the technique of Hudd, the engine of JJ and the defensive nous of Palacios…

It’s a shame we have so many who can play the 10 role but no real rm or rw that has both defense and real threat going forward esp in chipping in with a few goals. That might help defensively as we are to often attacked down that side

100% agree, which is why for someone of GLC ilk on the wing is disastrous…its more noticable out there than in the middle as part of a 3. It just seems to me in midfield the only 3 players we have with workrate, and who can tackle are PEH, Sissoko & Tanguy the latter of which seems to struggle in the last 20 mins of games & Sissoko has difficulty passing the ball forwards.

Maddeningly sporadic and limited displays of acceleration and ball carrying, creativity, intensity and a bit of Argentinian know-how. All suggests there’s a player in there – if he can raise the level and consistency. Can he stay fit or in form for a run in the side? And that’s the rub with him, Tanguy, Dele to name a few – the skillset is there but something is lacking. Have we seen their best and they’re simply not the required (mental) level?
Modric (perhaps an unfair comparison ) took a while to adjust but given a regular berth, starting on the left before moving inside, was running games soon enough.
The reality at Spurs is that there is a squad of players of varying quality which the manger/coach is required to utilise. There may be some investment additions /seat fillers too. I’d like to see some coaching and managing to improve these players.

If you are a midfielder in the Prem these days you are still required to put a shift in defensively, even if you are recognised as more of a creative player. Simple as that.

I just think GLC lacks work rate, furthermore the effort applied when tackling is required disappears completely once he’s booked, and is hardly there beforehand. Its noticeable too more often than not he left Tanganga isolated as he nearly always drifted infield, in fairness this drifting infield is an issue for all of our wide players bar Berghyn but then he has no end product, much like GLC. If GLC has to play it must be central & in a 3 else I just dont see how he can be accommodated… wide players generally have one or more in abundance of pace, creativity, serious goal threat… he has neither.

Don’t know if it’s just the midfield, but we need more leadership – people who will take the game by the scruff of the neck and not simply allow us to drop deeper and deeper until the inevitable happens.

PEH is a leader who doesn’t shirk away from anything, but I have some doubts about GLC and Tanguy in that regard. They’re both clever and talented but we need more of a presence in the spine of the team.

Lloris-Toby/Rodon-PEH-Kane is a good axis, but we need more.

GLC has talent – but a bit like Ndombele, he lacks discipline defensively. PEH needs midfield partners who can contribute at both ends of the pitch.
