“Truly dreadful” – Tottenham duo singled out for their poor performance against Newcastle

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive vulnerabilities were on display in today’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

Despite dominating large portions of the game and creating multiple scoring opportunities, Spurs failed to convert their control into a victory, ultimately suffering a disappointing loss.

Newcastle took the lead just before halftime when Harvey Barnes capitalised on a well-delivered cross from Lloyd Kelly.

Tottenham managed to equalise in the second half, thanks to a fortunate own goal by Dan Burn, but their resurgence was short-lived.

Sky Sports co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe was particularly critical of Spurs’ defensive efforts, especially in the sequence leading up to Newcastle’s decisive second goal.

Hinchcliffe highlighted that Cristian Romero was guilty of ball-watching and not tracking Jacob Murphy’s run, allowing Murphy to easily get in behind the defence. Murphy then set up Alexander Isak for the winning goal.

The pundit stressed the importance of Tottenham’s defenders maintaining awareness of their surroundings and positioning themselves better to counter potential threats.

Romero’s momentary lapse in focus, along with Destiny Udogie’s failure to mark Murphy, left the Lilywhites exposed and ultimately led to their defeat.

Hinchcliffe remarked on Sky Sports:

“Defensively from Tottenham, this is just truly dreadful.

“Don’t ball-watch, you have to drop off. Romero just seems to be watching the ball, no idea where [Jacob] Murphy is, [Destiny] Udogie hasn’t tracked him in.

“It’s too easy for Murphy to get in behind that Tottenham back line.”

This loss underscores the recurring defensive issues that have plagued Spurs. As Tottenham push forward in their season, it will be essential to address these defensive shortcomings to secure better results and strengthen their backline.

While Spurs’ ability to control matches and generate chances is clear, their success this season will heavily depend on converting them and improving their defensive solidity.
