Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a surprise move for the Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
The 26 year-old has been a squad player for Liverpool and he has not been a regular starter for them. A report via Fichajes claims that Spurs are prepared to strengthen their defensive unit with his signing.
The 26-year-old is considered an important first-team player by Liverpool and the Reds are not prepared to sanction his departure any time soon. Liverpool are already lacking in depth in the defensive unit and selling the 26-year-old would weaken them further.
Gomez is versatile enough to operate anywhere across the back four and his ability to slot into multiple roles and still perform at a high-level makes him an indispensable asset. In addition to that, players like Kostas Tsimikas and Joel Matip are sidelined with injuries, and therefore Gomez will be a key player for Liverpool in the coming weeks.
The report adds that Tottenham will ‘explore the possibility’ of signing Gomez in the coming weeks, and it remains to be seen whether they decide to test Liverpool’s resolve with an offer in January.
The Reds need to bring in defensive reinforcements themselves and remains to be seen how the situation develops.
As for Gomez, he will want to play regularly at this stage of his career and it will be interesting to see whether Tottenham can convince him to join them.
