Tottenham warned against signing 24-year-old midfielder

Tottenham has been linked with the move for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

The 24-year-old is expected to leave the Italian club in search of regular playing time and he has been linked with a move to the Premier League club.

However, popular pundit Kevin Campbell has now warned Tottenham against signing the American international.

Campbell has revealed to Football Insider that the 24-year-old American midfielder will look to play regularly, and Tottenham might not be able to provide him with that opportunity.

Furthermore, he suggested that the arrival of McKennie could cause unrest in the dressing room. Tottenham signed Yves Bissouma from Brighton and Hove Albion during the summer transfer window, but the defensive midfielder has not been able to hold down a regular starting berth.

The arrival of another midfielder will push him down the pecking order, and he is unlikely to be happy with that situation.

Campbell believes that signing the Juventus ace would be signing players just for the sake of it.

He said: “There’s Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Bissouma – they are already at the club.

“It’s just signing players for the sake of it. These players aren’t stupid, they want to play every game.

“You can accumulate all the players you want, but it’s only going to cause problems in the dressing room.

“If McKennie joins Spurs, he’ll want guarantees that he is going to play. You can imagine how Bissouma will react to that – he’ll be fuming.

“It’ll just cause unrest in that dressing room.”

There is no doubt that Spurs need to add more quality in the central midfield, but they are in need of an attacking midfielder, instead of another central midfielder. Conte needs to bring in someone who will add craft and goals to the midfield.

While McKennie is an impressive player, he is very similar to the options already at the club.

It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few weeks now.
