Former Spurs scout Mick Brown has revealed that Tottenham are unlikely to make a move for Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, despite the player entering the final year of his contract.

Spurs signed Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall in the summer, but they were also keen on signing another midfielder, with the likes of Conor Gallagher and Jacob Ramsey strongly linked.

The club even made an offer for the Aston Villa man, including Giovani Lo Celso as part of the deal. But Villa rejected, and Ramsey ended up staying with the club.

They continue to be linked with a new midfielder, with Alasdair Gold recently claiming that Spurs will sign a new midfielder next summer.

Tottenham linked with Angel Gomes, but move seems unlikely

The North London club have been linked with the former Manchester United midfielder, with recent reports suggesting that the club are closely monitoring him, and are seriously considering making a move for him.

However, Brown, who served as a scout for Spurs until the 2021/22 season, explained that although Gomes has garnered interest from several clubs, Spursare not expected to be among those pursuing the player.

A major reason for Tottenham’s reluctance to target Gomes is the presence of James Maddison in their current squad. Maddison has thrived under manager Ange Postecoglou, playing a pivotal role in the attacking midfield position. His ability to control possession and orchestrate play has made him a crucial part of Postecoglou’s setup.

James Maddison’s presence key to Spurs’ decision

Brown explained that while Angel Gomes is a talented and versatile midfielder, his style of play overlaps significantly with Maddison’s role at Spurs. Both players excel in possession, making it unnecessary for Tottenham to add another player with a similar profile.

He also highlighted concerns over whether Gomes could handle the physical demands of the Premier League, which might be another reason Tottenham are reluctant to pursue him.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said:

“I don’t think Tottenham are among those interested. They’ve already got James Maddison who can play a similar role.”

“I would see those two as being not too dissimilar. I know Gomes plays a bit deeper but we’ve seen Maddison drop into that space in recent games.”

“They’re both players who want to see a lot of the ball and look to make things happen, they’re clever passers and good in possession. I’d be surprised if Tottenham made a move for Gomes because of that.”

“Angel’s skill has never been in question, the only concerns are about whether he’d be physically good enough to keep up in the Premier League.

“I’ve heard there are clubs looking at him and his contract situation, not just Tottenham.”

Gomes has been an outstanding performer for Lille, having played over 120 matches for the club. He ended last season as one of Ligue 1’s top assist providers and has also recently made his debut for the England senior team, further boosting his reputation.

With just over 160 senior appearances across Lille, Boavista FC, and Manchester United, the young midfielder has made 40 goal contributions (15 goals and 25 assists).

While European clubs are closely monitoring Gomes’ situation, Brown believes Spurs will prioritise other targets, especially with Maddison firmly established as the club’s creative force in midfield.
