Tottenham take first step to douse Romero to Madrid transfer speculations

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur might face challenges in retaining their star defender Cristian Romero this summer.

European giants Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing Romero for a potential acquisition in the upcoming transfer window.

Despite these rumours, Spurs are distancing themselves from claims linking the Argentine defender to a move to Santiago Bernabeu.

According to Football.London, the Lilywhites are dismissing these reports and remain committed to keeping Romero.

Currently on international duty with Argentina for the upcoming Copa America, the 26-year-old centre-back is reportedly being monitored by Real Madrid during the tournament.

However, Tottenham views Romero as untouchable, recognizing his importance in their backline.

The World Cup-winning defender played a crucial role under Ange Postecoglou last season, making 33 Premier League appearances and scoring five goals, the most for a defender in the division.

Since arriving in North London in 2021, Romero has gradually become a key figure at the club. His performances have steadily improved, and he was appointed one of the club’s vice-captains last year.

Real Madrid, dealing with a defensive crisis due to injuries to their primary centre-backs like Eder Militao and David Alaba last season, might be looking to bolster their defence with Romero’s signing.

However, Tottenham’s focus is on building a competitive team under Postecoglou, and retaining a player of Romero’s calibre is a top priority.
