Tottenham reject proposal as transfer collapses despite clubs being in advanced talks

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon was on the verge of a loan move to Lille this summer, but the deal fell through when Spurs opted to reject the offer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on X that Lille were in advanced negotiations with Tottenham for Reguilon, but the North London club ultimately declined the loan proposal, preferring to find a permanent solution for the Spanish defender.

He shared the following:

“Understand Lille were in advanced talks for Sergio Reguilón but Spurs rejected their loan proposal.”

With Reguilon in the final year of his contract, Spurs are considering their options to potentially sell him before the transfer window closes, avoiding the risk of losing him for free next summer.

Reguilon joined Tottenham in September 2020 on a five-year deal after an impressive season with Sevilla.

He made a strong start, assisting in his debut against Chelsea in the League Cup. However, his tenure at Spurs has been inconsistent, with injuries hampering his progress.

Throughout his time with the Lilywhites, Reguilon has made 67 appearances, scoring two goals and contributing eight assists.

In recent seasons, the 27-year-old left-back has spent time on loan at Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, and Brentford. His most recent loan spell at Brentford saw him provide four assists in 16 appearances in the second half of last season, showcasing glimpses of his potential.

As the transfer deadline approaches, it remains uncertain whether Reguilon will secure a move away from Tottenham or stay for the final year of his contract. Spurs may reassess their options in the final hours of the transfer window.
