Postecoglou happy for Tottenham to shell out £68m for star, but move seems unlikely – opinion

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to shatter their transfer record to sign Eberechi Eze ahead of next season.

The North London club made significant progress under Ange Postecoglou last season. His arrival resulted in them playing an attacking and attractive brand of football. Now, they are looking at ways to further bolster their squad ahead of next season.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, the former Celtic boss has given the green light to a move for Eberechi Eze.

Tottenham were in contention for a top-four spot until the final stages of the 2023/24 seasons. But, they failed to get the job done following a poor run at the end. Tottenham have missed out on Champions League football, but they have identified areas that need reinforcements.

Postecoglou is keen on adding another three to four players to his team to ensure they have enough depth to compete with the best teams in the country. Tottenham are in need of a player with an X-factor and Eze could help their cause.

The 25-year-old had a sensational season with Crystal Palace as he found the back of the net on 11 occasions and bagged six assists. On the back of his performances, he has managed to secure a place in England’s 26-man squad for the Euros.

Eze has three years left on his deal at Palace and Tottenham are willing to break the bank to secure his siganture. There is no shortage of interest in the 25-year-old but it seems he prefers joining Spurs.

The North London club have just learned the total cost of the operation. Eze’s buyout clause is set at £60 million with another £8 million in achievable add-ons. It will shatter the club’s current transfer record of £54 million they paid to Lyon for Tanguy Ndombele.

Postecoglou is more than happy to meet the Eagles’ demands. He feels Eze could transform Spurs heading into next season. He could provide cover for James Maddison and also provide Spurs with more options on the flanks.

Tottenham unlikely to be able to afford Eze

Even thought the report states Postecoglou would happily sign the player for £68 million, it will be interesting to see if Daniel Levy is willing to fund the move this summer.

The Tottenham chairman has always been quite reserved with his approach in the market and he might be sceptical of spending a substantial amount of money on the England international. Further more, Tottenham will have to strengthen the other areas of their squad as well. Apart from a quality attacking midfielder, they should look to invest in a reliable goal scorer, a central midfielder, a central defender and possibly another versatile full-back. It seems highly unlikely that they will be able to bring in all of these players after spending £68 million on the Crystal Palace star.

There is no doubt that the 25-year-old would improve them immensely, but the North London club might need to opt for a cheaper alternative if they want to plug all the gaps in their squad this summer.

They will need to improve the overall quality of their squad if they want to secure Champions League qualification and win trophies next year. It is fair to assume that they might have to sacrifice a move for Eze in order to improve the squad as a whole.
