Tottenham Hotspur picked up a morale-boosting victory over Aston Villa at the weekend but defender Cristian Romero left the pitch 15 minutes into the second half with an injury.

It appears that the 26-year-old Argentine international has picked up a bone injury in a toe on his right foot. The defender will now undergo tests to determine the extent of damage.

According to a report from TYC Sports, his injury has now ‘set off alarm bells’ in the Argentine national team. Romero is a key player for club and country and Argentina were hoping to use him against Paraguay and Peru in the upcoming FIFA qualifiers.

Meanwhile, his absence will be a major blow for Tottenham as well. They are already lacking in depth in the defensive unit, and Romero is an indispensable asset for them. He has established himself as a key player for the club since joining them.

Meanwhile, the report adds that the situation is ‘not encouraging’ and Tottenham will be keeping an eye on the tests now. Tottenham and Argentina will certainly hope that he can return to action as soon as possible. The 26-year-old will be instrumental to their success.

In his absence, the North London club are expected to give Radu Dragusin regular opportunities. The Romanian has not been a regular starter for Tottenham ever since he joined the club. It will be interesting to see if he can grab the opportunity with both hands and convince the manager that he is ready to start for them every week.

For now, Spurs will hope that the injury is not serious and defender can return to action soon. They will be hoping to secure Champions League qualification this season and they cannot afford to lose a key player like him for an extended period.
