Tottenham overtake La Liga giants in the race to sign 59-cap international

Antonio Conte during his time at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to improve their defensive options during the January transfer window and the Inter Milan defender Stefan De Vrij is reportedly on their radar.

According to a report from Fichajes, the 30-year-old Dutch international is an obsession for manager Antonio Conte and the Italian is looking to reunite with him at the Premier League club.

Conte worked with the Dutch central defender during their time together at Inter Milan and the 30-year-old was a key member of Conte’s title-winning side.

It is no secret that Tottenham will have to sign a quality defensive partner for Cristian Romero and the 59-cap Dutch international would be a superb acquisition.

De Vrij will be a free agent at the end of the season and Tottenham will be able to sign him for a reasonable price next month. Alternatively, they could look to agree on a pre-contract deal with the player which would allow him to join them on a free transfer at the end of this season.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are thought to be keen on signing the experienced defender as well but Tottenham have apparently overtaken them in the transfer race.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can offer him a more lucrative package as compared to Atletico Madrid in the coming weeks. This is De Vrij’s final opportunity to bag an important contract and therefore the financial offer is likely to play a key role in his decision.
