Tottenham omit pair from their Europa League squad

Tottenham has omitted Paulo Gazzaniga and Gedson Fernandes from their Europa League squad for the 2020/21 season, Standard Sports reports.

The pair have paid the price for Tottenham having too many non-homegrown players in their team.

UEFA permits teams to have no more than 17 non-home-grown players in their team in a season and Spurs have 19.

Jose Mourinho had to make a tough decision and both players missed out.

Gazzaniga was Spurs’ second choice since he joined the club until this season, but the club signed Joe Hart this summer.

The former England goalkeeper joins as one of the club’s homegrown players and he is now the club’s second-choice goalkeeper, pushing Gazzaniga down the pecking order.

Fernandes was Mourinho’s first signing when the Portuguese manager joined Spurs late last year.

The midfielder joined on an initial 18 months loan deal with the option to sign at the end of this season.

His time at Spurs hasn’t been a successful one as he struggles to start games for the club.

The report adds that Alfie Whiteman, 22, or England Under-21 international Brandon Austin is set to become Mourinho’s third-choice goalkeeper in Europe.
