Tottenham officially confirm their participation in European Super League

By Bruce Grove -

So, it is actually going to happen. Tottenham have officially confirmed via their Twitter page that they are one of the 12 founding members of the European Super League.

The dirty dozen are as follows:

AC Milan
Arsenal
Atletico
Chelsea
Barcelona
Inter
Juventus
Liverpool
Man City
Man United
Real Madrid
Tottenham

The competition will be a midweek event that will replace the Champions League, well for these 12 teams anyway.

There will be no qualification required for the 12 founding clubs and they are guaranteed a place every single season regardless of how they perform in their respective leagues.

That is if they allowed to compete in their domestic competitions, which is very much up in the air as we speak.

So, Spurs could finish 10th but no worries, they are in, whereas Leicester City, for example, could finish 20 points and 6 places above them and they get diddly squat.

This is not based on merit at all and goes against everything that football is supposed to be about.

There is massive money involved and that is obviously one of the driving factors here, what is not a driving factor is what the fans think or want.

This is going to get real nasty real soon, UEFA is certain to react, so is the Premier League and there is not even a guarantee that Spurs or any of the above-named teams will be allowed to feature in their respective leagues next season.

There is also the players, with a strong likelihood that any players involved in this will be barred from international matches, including the world cup.

This is just the start, governments may even get involved and legal recourse is almost certain to follow.

Strap yourselves in, the battle for the soul of football has begun.

For most european leagues its the same teams qualifying year after year for the Champions League. Last winner outside the big European powerhouse sides was Porto nearly 20 years ago with Jose at the helm.
At least under existing format there is a vague hope that an unfancied side could win, which gives teams hope.
The champions league as a product will be fairly dead without the superleague teams as they won’t get the tv revenue, so what chance will smaller teams have.
Half the fun of european competition is playing teams you don’t usually play or perhaps havent really heard of.

I had no idea that our club chairman was a money-grabbing philistine…😉

This is just about greed, lining owners’ and chairmen’s pockets, nothing more, nothing less.

EXACTLY.

Isnt it funny how Mr SKY Neville came across like he was attacking Liverpool fans who had nothing to do with the Super League.
Guess the bin dippers will just hate him more & remind him it’s the owners, not us!

Wow. Im officially done when this starts.

The battle for the soul of football who’d have thought they can sink so low.

Its embarrassing that we’ve signed up to be whipping boys with no trophies.

Who does Daniel Levy think he is? Little chipolata weilding tool who thinks he is king dong.

When we had Div 1. Wasn’t it blind faith that pushed us into tgat thing called the Premiere League, didn’t work out badly for UK Football abroad, did it?

The players all want you pay against the beat teams, so thru want yo play in these games.

They know they will all get their wage rises, so it’s win win for them. Well the Top players atleast.

They can’t afford to chuck out ANY of Top 6, how would they sell rights around the world. They sure seem very scared, the UK football authorities

It’s been like this for a long time really. The cups are worth nothing now as they don’t get you Champions League money. If the fans were that bothered they wouldn’t have welcomed some of the more unsavory chairman with big pockets.

This is almost the same list of UK teams that forced the Premier League into existence. Likely there will be a lot of chest beating and eventually some negotiation.

The arguments about certain teams always being in it are slightly disingenuous. Certain teams, even under the current Champions League format are guaranteed to be in it every year. Barcelona, Real, Bayern, etc.. I would prefer a league where teams din’t have to qualify via domestic but once in could be relegated. You can see from the clubs that have entered that the current way of choosing clubs to enter (i.e. 4 from the UK) isn’t the best way forward.

Some sort of League is a good idea – having to qualify by domestic league for every year is not great. The race for 4th has become far more important to clubs than getting cups which isn’t good for fans. Also the balance between promotions from different Countries is so so difficult to get right. What the TV companies want, let’s be honest, is a lot more than 4 Premier League teams, because the quality is very good for watching and the fans want to watch those teams.

The teams involved definitely will not be kicked out of the Premier League – it needs them more than they need it. Can’t see the international threats staying – you would end up with a breakaway international scene like with rugby.

Mr Tappa. For once I agree 1000% with you. This is disgusting. As Spurs fans new to the top end we could be satisfied with effectively ensuring our place forever more but damn. It’s just wrong. Appalling.

Welcome to the next level in soccer sports entertainment boys and girls.
The closed protectionist cabal is in full flow.
They are the money in soccer anyway, so why should others get it.
Genie is out of the bag, it won’t go back in.
Don’t look for the romance of football the big boys aren’t interested and neither are fans (are you really).
Enjoy the League Cup one last time this week, but winning is an ego thing anyway managers tell you.
FA cups or making waves in respective domestic leagues, meh. Most leagues tend to be the same guys winning anyway even for you you crazy English.
Even the Champions League was looking at a format change so is this not the same they’ll say, except it makes a higher standard product because its the bigger teams only.
We can also pay the players the best wages, its not like they really do it for the badge.
Plus you’ve got the longest bar, fine dining, sky walks and ability to watch players walk onto a pitch through a glass tunnel while you eat a prawn sandwich.
Fans would not then need to help out like this year with buying merchandise for Maine or the Os because you can spend it just on your club.
Oh that cash the big boys miss out on.
Wouldn’t you want these things as fans and that ultimate sports soccer entertainment experience more often.
Welcome to sports entertainment boys and girl.

I don’t like the idea of “The Americans”, coming into our game & slowly trying to run it.
But who is actually allowing them to do just that.
The Premier League & the leagues lower.

It feels like this exact thing is happening to our country, car firms, large companies, property etc, anything that’s worth anything is sold to the highest bidder.
Do you guys think the British could go to Russia, China or US & just buy important sporting organisations just like that. Greed I feel is killing this country.

But I guess everyone, whether your a player, a club owner or an Association just wants a bigger piece of the pie.

People are finally starting to see what Football NFL style will look like.
“No relegation….. EVER!!!”

I love me some NFL over the last few years, the actual game. Maybe coz it’s so different to what we call Football.

If there was a guarantee from Levy that he would actually invest money gained from this Super League into the team, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
But we all now that’s not going to happen.

What really rubs me up the wrong way is why are the Premier League it seems being forced by UEFA/FIFA etc to Punish the English clubs that want to take part in this.

Premier League will not sell abroad without the so called big 6, so how can they really punish these clubs like Mr Sky [Neville] is talking about.
Nose & face springs to mind……….. in both senses of the phrase.

Also when these TV Rights come up for grabs who do we think will be right at the front of the queue to buy the rights? You guessed it [SKY].
Neville will quickly forget his Sunday afternoon rant about how terrible this is.

Premier league are thinking just as much about money as the Big 6 are, as the Champions League are, which is why they are rushing to appease these break away clubs.

Will the Prem be affected that much apart from the only important position at the top of the table being 1st, like it used to be.
They will still make money from TV Rights abroad.
So what are the Prem really moaning about.

Wasn’t the Champions League originally supposed to be for the Champions & not the Top4 & Europa League winners, if they can move the goalposts, then why can’t the club’s that make the Champions League most of their money.

I used to think like that about getting bankrolled by Abramovich and oil money but now i wouldn’t care i just want to see my team winning things.
I’ve probably only 30 years left ‘f*ck pride’ .
This is of course as long as we are still entered into the Premier League,,,it will be very messy…

I remember when something similar was going on with Burny and the F1 break away….I think they gave more money and added more races to keep everyone happy….Is there really anything anyone can do to stop this legally?
