Tottenham learn how much they would have to pay for defensive midfield target

Tottenham Hotspur will have to fork out £21 million to complete the signing of Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso.

The North London club might have had mixed results in the new season so far but they surely did wonders in the recently concluded transfer window. Tottenham not only bolstered their squad but they even managed to offload players who were surplus to requirements.

Giovani Lo Celso is one of the players they were keen on getting rid of and managed to strike a deal with Real Betis on transfer deadline day. During those negotiations, Spurs also managed to negotiate an option to buy the American international Johnny Cardoso in the next summer transfer window. According to a report from The Telegraph, Spurs have an option to sign the Betis midfield star for £21 million.

Cardoso joined the Spanish outfit at the start of the year from Brazilian club Internacional and he has only gone from strength to strength since. He has featured in 23 matches for them and has also contributed towards three goals. The defensive midfielder’s consistent performances have resulted in a significant amount of interest from across Europe.

As confirmed by the Spanish club’s president Ángel Haro, Spurs have managed to negotiate an option to buy the 22-year-old midfielder. While they agreed to sell Lo Celso for a cut-price fee, they have done a great job to secure an option to sign the American international. The North London club will have the option to complete the deal within the first two weeks of the 2025 summer window post which other clubs will be able to compete for his services.
