Journalist confirms Tottenham intends to extend key first-team player’s contract

Tottenham are reportedly set to activate the one-year extension option in Son Heung-min’s contract, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

The South Korean recently admitted that there have been no talks regarding a new contract with the club as yet with his current deal expiring in the coming summer.

The update from the Tottenham captain is a concerning one, given how key he is to Ange Postecoglou’s side.

And while, there have been no talks regarding a new contract with the player, the club does intend to trigger the option to extend his current contract for another year.

That has been confirmed by Tom Barclay, who shared the following  update on X:

“It’s understood tho that Spurs plan to trigger the 1-year option they hold on his deal to take it to summer 2026.”

Despite interest from several Saudi Pro League clubs, extending Son’s contract is seen as a strategic move by Tottenham. This decision would not only secure the immediate future of their star player but also ensure the club retains his transfer value, should they explore a potential sale down the line.

Retaining Son for another year would provide Spurs with much-needed stability, especially given his outstanding performance last season.

The South Korean forward, who also serves as team captain, scored 17 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League last season. This season he has scored 2 and assisted 2 in 5 league games so far.
