Tottenham have ‘registered an interest’ in 25-yr-old as key star’s replacement

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret.

According to journalist Ciro Venerato, some of the Premier League clubs have registered an interest in signing the 25-year-old goalkeeper and Tottenham are one of those clubs who could look to sign him at the end of the season.

“Napoli would like to continue with Meret, and in this sense we will have to sit down at the negotiating table and await developments,” said Ciro Venerato (via Calcio Napoli 24).

“There are some Premier League clubs that have however registered an interest in the Friulian, Tottenham above all.”

“In the event of a separation, which Spalletti and the club do not wish for, the Azzurri would turn to Vicario.”

It is no secret that Tottenham need to sign a goalkeeper in the summer and Meret could prove to be a quality acquisition.

The 25-year-old has been in fine form for Napoli this season and he has helped them challenge for the league title. Napoli are currently on top of the league table and Meret has helped them keep 12 clean sheets in 24 league matches. He has kept 3 clean sheets in 7 Champions League outings as well.

There is no doubt that the Italian would be an upgrade on club legend Hugo Lloris. The Frenchman has regressed massively and his error-prone performances have been a major concern.

Antonio Conte will have to replace him as the club first choice goalkeeper and the Napoli goalkeeper would be a superb alternative.

The 25-year-old has a contract with Napoli until the summer of 2024 and he will have just 12 months left on his deal at the end of the season. The Italian could be available for a reasonable price if he refuses to sign an extension with them.

Spurs might be able to offer him a lucrative contract compared to the one he is on at Napoli. Also, the lure of the Premier League could prove tempting.
