Tottenham eyeing 27-yr-old La Liga star ‘considered one of the best’ in his role

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping tabs on the Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino.

The 27-year-old Spanish international has established himself as a key player for the La Liga club and a report from Fichajes claims that he is ‘considered one of the best’ midfielders in the country.

Tottenham are looking to bring him in as the midfield partner for Yves Bissouma and James Maddison. Merino will add defensive steel and control in the middle of the park. He has a contract with the Spanish club until the summer of 2025 and it remains to be seen whether Tottenham can agree on a reasonable fee for him.

There is no doubt that Tottenham need to add more quality in the central midfield and Merino could be the ideal alternative to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is expected to leave the north London club in the coming months. The Denmark international has been a key player for Tottenham since joining the club but he has fallen out of favour since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou.

There have been rumours that the Denmark international is not the ideal fit for the Australian manager’s playing style. Merino could be the ideal alternative and remains to be seen whether the Spaniard is keen on a return to the Premier League.

He has previously had an unsuccessful spell at Newcastle United and he could be determined to showcase his qualities in English football this time around.

Tottenham have started the season well and there is no reason why they cannot attract Merino if they manage to return to the Champions League.
