Tottenham boss Postecoglou certainly has his work cut out

By The Boy -

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is one Premier League coach with it all to do this season. The transfer wheels turn slowly in Haringey and, historically, at a pace occasionally described as glacial. During this break, a player mix of youth and experience was acquired, but it remains to be seen if the club has done enough. The summer window can be a fractious time of year for football supporters, and footballers are always looking for new ways to while away that big chunk of the day that isn’t spent training on the practice pitches. Many Tottenham players engage in various activities during their downtime, including https://india.1xbet.com/line/cricket which has also proved to be a popular choice.

According to respected journalist David Ornstein, the Spurs gaffer desperately wanted Dominic Solanke more than any other striker in the club’s price range after he scored 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth last season. Given the prevailing question marks around the Brazilian Richarlison, and the truly limited appeal that Timo Werner has in front of goal, it was inevitable that Postecoglou wanted to add more weight to his attack. That said, there’s a big leap between hitting the target for The Cherries and doing it for Spurs, as numerous failed frontmen have discovered upon entering N17.

Replacing Harry Kane remains on Tottenham’s ‘to-do-list list, and if this third attempt is a success, then it will be truly miraculous, as this will be swapping the England captain for a player who has failed to progress beyond the England U21 set-up. Big Ange is not discouraged by this, however.

“Dom had a very bright start to his career and he was at big clubs, which every player aspires to, but for one reason or another, it didn’t work out for him, but the fact that he’s got himself back to this position where he’s again one of the premier strikers in the Premier League, it’s a testament to his character, and he’s only 26, about to turn 27. So I think probably because of those early challenges he had, I think he’s going to try to push and have a really strong and impactful, meaningful years from now on”.

This is all well and good, but should Solanke fail to hit the required heights, then the Aussie could find himself well and truly up against it.

As for Tottenham’s midfield, there are questions to be asked where the dynamism will come from. James Maddison began brightly but soon went off the boil, and this was before his injury. Lucas Bergvall has certainly caught the eye in Spurs preseason, but is the youngster ready for Premier and Europa League campaigns?

For now, there are more questions than answers.
