Tottenham and Arsenal are no longer rivals, they are business partners

By Bruce Grove -

If this European Super League is allowed to continue then one upshot of it is that Tottenham and Arsenal are officially business partners.

Think about that for a minute, actual business partners.

Before anyone says that is the case with the Premier League, it is not, both clubs are members of the Premier League and not owners, if either gets relegated, they are no longer members, that is not the case with the European Super League.

There is so much wrong with this horrendous idea, from denying smaller clubs dreams of reaching the top table to a financial imbalance so massive that there will never be another Leicester City but it is also the demeaning of local rivalries that is grating with me right now.

The second “enemies” become business partners then that bitter rivalry that existed for a century is no longer so bitter any more because they both have the same vested interest.

Both Tottenham and Arsenal are founding clubs, they will govern the competition, set the rules and so forth and there is no cap on payments, the more they generate, the more they share.

This is clear from their brand new website

“The new annual tournament will provide significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a long-term commitment to uncapped solidarity payments which will grow in line with league revenues”

Some may say this is business reality and they are correct, however, with that goes the soul of the game and that competitive edge, to suggest otherwise is for the birds.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, what next? name changes, London Hotspur v London Gunners. Sounds mad, well I give you the New York Yankees v the New York Jets.

It is pretty much the same as the Prem. The clubs are all shareholders in the product of entertainment. The relegation doesn’t really matter cos the chances of the elite teams going down now with the tv money etc is next to nil.

But a stadium without fans, post-pandemic, isn’t a good look for the tv cameras…

Season tickets and gate receipts are a small part of the club’s revenue – TV money is where the action is.
