Top four rivals failed with a late move to sign 28-year-old from Tottenham

Aston Villa failed with a late move to sign Tottenham outcast Giovani Lo Celso on transfer deadline day.

Giovani Lo Celso’s future was one of the biggest talking points throughout the summer. While Tottenham had already completed the majority of their transfer business before heading into the deadline day, the future of the Argentine international was still uncertain.

Top four rivals Aston Villa wanted to prise him away from the North London club but according to reports via GMS, they failed with an attempt to sign him in the final hours of the window. Unai Emery was keen on reuniting with the Argentine midfielder and Villa pushed hard to acquire his services. But, Lo Celso really wanted to return to Real Betis and ended up sealing a deadline-day move to the Spanish club.

The Argentine international was surplus to requirements at the North London club. After having racked up less than 600 minutes in his 24 outings last season, he was keen on a move away in search of regular first-team action. With his contract running out, Spurs were also ready to sanction his departure. But, the transfer saga dragged on as clubs were not ready to meet Tottenham’s demands.

Eventually, Betis struck a deal with Ange Postecoglou’s team to sign the 28-year-old for a cut-price fee and he has penned down a four-year deal with the Spanish outfit. His arrival would have surely bolstered the Villa squad as he is capable of playing in multiple different roles but the player’s desire to return to Spain meant Emery’s team didn’t succeed in their attempt to sign him on deadline day.
