Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has revealed that Liverpool’s crushing defeat against Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds could prove to be a disadvantage for the London club.
Sherwood believes that Liverpool are now out of the Champions league and they will focus on finishing as high as possible in the Premier League.
Speaking on Sky Sports he said: “Their [Liverpool’s] season’s over. What have they got? They’ve got the top four now. That’s a bad result for Tottenham who are in the top-four because now if they [Liverpool] can get over the disappointment, they have to focus on one thing now and that is getting into the top four. That’s very, very important.”
Tottenham are currently fighting for a place in the top four and they will be hoping to secure Champions League qualification by the end of the season.
Meanwhile Liverpool will be desperate to secure or top-four finish as well and it remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp’s side can overtake Tottenham and secure a place in Europe’s premier competition next season.
Tottenham are currently 4th in the league table with 42 points and Liverpool have 35 points. However the Reds have two games in hand and they could close the gap down to just a single point if they managed to win their next two outings.
The Reds have picked up victories against Everton and Newcastle in their last two league matches and they will be desperate to build on that and put together a winning run in the league now.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can improve on their recent performances and secure Champions League qualification.
Missing out on the Champions league would be a devastating blow to Tottenham’s finances and they will struggle to attract top players without the lure of Champions League football as well.
