“This is not Spain” Tottenham man told to stop doing this one thing even though he was “Amazing”

Fans can easily get carried away when their team wins or a player does well, however, sensible fans will also point out the negative if it is needed and that has happened with Emerson Royal.

The 22-year-old put in a solid performance against Brentford last night and is fast adapting to the English game but he has brought one annoying trait with him from Spain and that is play-acting.

The Brazilian defender has spent his entire career in leagues where falling about and playing for a foul are common practice but as we all know, that is frowned upon in the English game and the fans have let him know that while at the same time rightfully praising him for a solid game.

Here is a mix of some of those comments, both negative and positive

So, as you can see, a mixed response and probably fair. Emerson has been steadily improving and it must be remembered he is just 22 and has a ton of progress in him and if anyone can harness that, it is Antonio Conte.

Needs to stop the rolling about though..less and less free kicks being dished out these days. Even Kane is getting little.Teamed up,well with Skipp to close down the right hand side

Walker had pace that Royal doesn’t and it seems the top class ones like James and TAA also have that. We don’t pay for top quality so he’s hopefully going to be as good as Conte makes him.

Conte did take Victor Moses and make him an effective wing back. Currently, I feel that he hasn’t the pace to be top class in this position but I am also hopeful Conte can further develop him to be a useful part of the squad. We should give the lad some time.

I’m not hating on him, I’m saying he’s bang average, unfortunately bang average is an improvement on Doherty and Aurier, but if we really want to flourish the person in this wing back role needs to be better than bang average.

I’m saying he’s average, which is an improvement on the previous encumbants, but not good enough in such a vital position to Conte’s system.

What have you seen that makes you think he’s better than average Len, and I don’t want to hear about his “potential”. Squad players have potential, but when wing backs form such a critical part of the system we need more than potential, we need proper top shelf quality.

He wasn’t great by any means last night, the habit of dropping to the floor feigning injury in tackles is a concern, he is almost on a par with Ndombele for that.

Amazing really.. hes 21 or so, no slouch yet refuses to cross the ball or run at an opposing full back… I’m not sure what place you have as a full back, let alone wing back in any EPL team with those qualities

Are you talking about players at other club or are you watching The Spurs hoping that Conte can get a beat out of them and hopefully get us competing for a place between 4 and 6th this year. You do realized the teams you might want to pull those supposedly better players are miles ahead of not just us but the league. You can enjoy your football however you want to, am not sure you see the full potential of Royal. For one he just came into the league and should get some credit for adopting to the league. It does said a lot about what we had prior or still, but you are very harsh on the kid. We play without wingers and I think he is giving real good accounts of himself. Am not saying you are incorrect on your opinion. The topic here is not about the entire team, it is about Royal and we can look at him without the deadwood on the team if we want to keep things in perspective. Just saying.

The players have been playing under the new coaching & tactical methods of Conte for one month and a day. Surely the way it should work with someone of Conte’s reputation is to give him the whole of his 1st season to do his work and then assess whether he has been able to upgrade the performances of individual players to a high enough level to not have to replace them. Then replace the ones who’ve not managed to improve enough – non triers excepted.

Although we’re sometimes quick to slate our defenders (understandably), the fact that before Conte’s arrival we had a bad run of results and were in the table’s bottom half, but since his arrival have not lost a league match and now sit in 6th place, must count for something?

We just achieved a clean sheet against a team which had plenty of the ball; the man of the match was a defensive midfielder, and I reckon the much maligned Sanchez was not far behind him. I already see improvements. Long may they continue.

Yep.. Walker is world class now and arguably the best in the league. At Emersons age we were loaning him out to Villa. I like the lad he’s impressed me. Different language, weather, new team, two different managers, gone in to a team struggling with Kane struggling.. He’s been one of our better players this season…. Fair shout to the lad.. He’s only going to get better.

Emerson is a squad player, a back up right sided wing back.

Look at all the top teams, the one thing they have in common is top top quality fullbacks. IMO we can muddle on through the season with Dier, Davies and Sanchez, but Conte will struggle to make his system work long term without a significant upgrade to this guy.

And just who would we play if he got injured? Tanganga? Not great going forward, Doherty? Dont even bother.

For me this is one of if not the most important areas to make a serious £40-50m signing asap.

No play acting and falling over in England? Must’ve watched something else.

He’s not amazing he’s work in progress but had plenty of potential he’s not rash like Aurier and he’s better than Doherty but he’s no Walker but I remember he wasn’t great at times especially young. At least under Conte he should improve and he is

It would appear from these type of comments that fans are desparate to see something magical in this player. He may come good later,[a Levy punt?],but he is miles off being capable of playing the wingback role until he learns to cross a ball and moves it forward more often.Hopefully Conte can bring about that sort of improvement in him,but I think a lot of people like him because he is not Aurier.

Amazing??? what match was i watching then?? I think the result papers over the fact that there is still a lot of work to be done.. At one point we had 78% passing accuracy which was atrocious and for most of the match many were just running like headless chickens.

Don’t get me wrong, 3 points and a clean sheet is a step in the right direction but lets not get carried away

He certainly wasn’t “amazing” in any way shape or form. Can’t cross to save his life. Defensively he looks ok against crap sides.
