Transfer insider Dean Jones believes Tottenham have ‘started to explore’ a deal for Ivan Toney.
Toney is a name that has been linked with Tottenham this summer as a potential Harry Kane replacement.
The Brentford striker is currently serving a ban imposed by the FA due to betting-related charges. Toney will not be available to play until mid-January 2024.
It has been previously reported by The Athletic that a move for Toney has been internally discussed internally by Spurs.
And now Dean Jones has suggested that the club are beginning to explore a move for him but any deal would depend on how realistic Brentford are with their valuation for him.
He also stated that he is not sure if something is going to happen in regards to links with Romelu Lukaku.
He told GiveMeSport:
“Toney is a deal that they have started to explore, but that will come down to how realistic Brentford are in terms of what his value is. It seems they might price him out of a move like this.
“So, there’s no particular optimism at this stage for Tottenham making much headway with that. If they were to look for another forward, they’ve been linked with Romelu Lukaku, but I’m very skeptical about that. I don’t think that’s something that is going to happen.”
TalkSport pundit Dean Ambrose has also urged Spurs to sign Toney suggesting that his abilities as a proven Premier League goalscorer could be a valuable addition to the squad once he becomes eligible to play in January.
He said:
“Someone mentioned it last week, go and sign Ivan Toney. I know he can’t play until January, but you’ve got a proven Premier League goalscorer that can come into the team in January. 20-plus goals again.”
Ivan Toney has scored 68 goals and assisted 21 in 124 appearances for Brentford and 32 of those have come in the Premier League over the last two seasons.
There is no doubting his immense goal-scoring prowess and he could be an excellent signing for Tottenham.
