“There is an interest”: Tottenham looking to sign 26-year-old star this summer

By Saikat -

Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret is on the cusp of winning the league title with the Italian club this season.

Napoli managed to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League as well and the 26-year-old Italian goalkeeper’s performances have attracted the attention of Tottenham Hotspur.

Italian journalist Ciro Venerato has now revealed that the North London club are keen on signing the 26-year-old goalkeeper at the end of the season and Napoli are already looking at potential replacements. However, Venerato feels that Meret will end up staying at Napoli.

He said (h/t AreaNapoli): “Does Napoli monitor any goalkeepers, even to replace Alex Meret? Yes, even if the club hopes the Friulian will remain. There is an interest, especially in recent months, from Tottenham in the Azzurri goalkeeper.” “For this reason, the Neapolitan club has followed Vicario, who is incumbent on Inter, also thanks to the possible sale of Onana. My opinion, however, is that the goalkeeper for Napoli next season will be Alex Meret.”

The 26-year-old has been a reliable goalkeeper for Napoli and he could prove to be an upgrade on Hugo Lloris next season.

The 36-year-old French international goalkeeper has been quite poor this season and his error-prone performances have cost Tottenham dearly. The Premier League side should look to replace them at the end of the season and Meret would be a solid long-term addition.

The 26-year-old has proven his quality in the Italian league with Napoli and the opportunity to showcase his qualities in the Premier League could be an attractive option for the player.

However, Tottenham must ensure Champions League qualification in order to attract top-quality players.

Meret is highly likely to win the league title with Napoli and he could play in the Champions League with them next season. He will not want to leave for a club without Champions League football next season.
