The jokers are coming out of the woodwork to declare Tottenham finished – Opinion

If there is one thing in football that is as certain as night following day it is overreaction and hyperbole depending on a couple of results.

Tottenham was very poor yesterday against Brighton, there is no denying that and Jose Mourinho does deserve some criticism for what occurred and so do the players.

But listening to some pundits today you would think that Spurs are ten points adrift and almost certain to be relegated.

There was some mitigation for what happened yesterday, not a lot but some. That is not to detract away from the result and overall performance but to look at what happens in a vacuum without context is what leads to the overreaction that is going on right now.

Today I have seen some incredible stuff, especially on that provocative Talksport from both callers and their so-called presenters.

For example, you had one numpty calling for Mourinho to be replaced by none other than Frank Lampard, you got Jamie O’Hara, who has more front than Asda considering how woeful a footballer he was stating that there is no chance that Spurs will finish top-four.

Now, just a couple of months back when Spurs were beating Man Utd 6-1 and Southampton 5-2 the story was of course so different, when Arsenal and Man City were taken care of, the story was so different. Then Tottenham was considered genuine title challengers and the fact they finished a whopping 40 points behind Liverpool last season was conveniently ignored.

Now we are being told Pochettino would have done this and he would have done that and that Spurs never suffered without Kane the way they did yesterday. Well, with Kane where was we when Poch got the boot?

The heart of Tottenham’s creativity was ripped out of the team for yesterdays game, no Lo Celso, Reguilon and Kane and while they should have done better, you cannot make wine with water but that is also ignored.

Liverpool recently went on an appalling run, Leciester City collapsed last season and threw away a champions league spot, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a certainty to be fired not long ago, Arsenal fell down the league like a rock in water and now are one of the in-form teams, I could go on but I am sure you get the picture.

After last season if I had fallen into a coma and just woken up today and seen the current state of the Spurs team I will be honest and say I would have been pleasantly surprised.

Sixth in the Premier League (fifth and just four points behind Liverpool if we win our game in hand) Carabao Cup final, fifth round of the FA Cup, last 32 of the Europa League, third best defensive record, third best goal difference, two of the top three goalscorers in the league, top assist in the country in Kane and more, yeah, we are definitely a club in crisis.

I get it that fans, pundits and so on are disappointed and angry and want to vent but if we beat Chelsea this week those very same fans and pundits will be hailing Mourinho as a genius once again and that the club is going in the right direction, well, most of them anyway.

It is now so predictable, when Bale was brought back Levy was a God, now he is Satan because he does not back the manager. When Mourinho owned Guardiola it was a masterclass, lose to Brighton and he is a dinosaur, the list is endless of the kneejerk reactions and today has been a beauty.

Football is all about opinions but those opinions carry much more weight when everything is analysed and taken into consideration, like at the end of a season but when you flip flop depending on a result then I am sorry, those opinions are worthless because they are not grounded in reality and will almost certainly change depending on which way the wind is blowing.

I am gutted about recent results but right now, taking everything into consideration I am ok with where we are as a club and the direction we are heading in and yes, I back Mourinho and do believe that once the dust has settled that we will be a club that is finally winning silverware on a regular basis.
