The Athletic: Spurs keeps wasting opportunities to put pressure on clubs in the top-four race

Tottenham Hotspur remains in the fight for a top-four spot for UEFA Champions League football next season; however, their path to finishing in the top four is more complicated than it has needed to be over the last couple of months.

Spurs have either dropped points against clubs like against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley or taking advantage of a Manchester United team who had got one point in their last two fixtures.

The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare states that these missed opportunities are a microcosm summing up their season to remain in the race.

“This is not a great Manchester United team. They are flawed and vulnerable, and with an interim head coach in charge are clearly in a period of transition. Spurs have such an opportunity to finish above them this season and strike at a moment when United are punching so substantially below their financial and historical weight,” Eccleshare wrote.

“They will surely not be like this for much longer. Spurs could still finish above them this season — they are five points behind with two games in hand after all — but Antonio Conte also has Arsenal to worry about, and his side can’t keep wasting these opportunities to put the pressure on.”

Spurs still have two games in hand in an attempt to secure all six points push themselves further into the fight. Clinching UEFA Champions League football for next season would go a long way in helping speed up this project and show Harry Kane they’re heading in the right direction with Conte.

Nonetheless, they can’t afford to continue dropping points to keep up with Manchester United, West Ham United, and Arsenal.
