Substitution Autopsy: NDombele Played Out Of Position, Wanyama’s Kaput + Kane’s Immunity From Being Hooked

By The Boy -
Wanyama for Sissoko

INTRODUCING WANYAMA

This was a curious call from Pochettino.

Would it not have made more sense to tell him to wind in the challenges, instead, to avoid trouble?

Sure, Sissoko was on a yellow, but Moussa was having a cracker of game. 90.3% passing accuracy – which for the big Frenchman is historic! Defensive third passing accuracy was 7/7, Middle third passing accuracy was 16/17.

Unfortunately, 2 minutes later, Mauricio’s attempt to shore up the 1-1 backfired spectacularly, and Leicester City scored again.

Ndombele for Moura

NDOMBELE OFF

Bringing on Moura for the death of it was an insult to all concerned. Kane ought to have been switched out for the Brazilian immediately after the second goal.

Total actions/successful actions

Moreover, subbing Tanguy was an inadvertent confession from the gaffer that he has not yet worked out how he is going to play the lad.

Which is curious, given he was a Poch pick.

This is a £60million player who we know is a genuine talent. Yet Mauricio got a barely better than evens return from him.

Maybe the answer is that Poch is playing Tanguy out of position. Looking at his time for Amiens SC, NDombele played 99% of the time on the left.

CONCLUSION: Yet again, Mauricio’s in game management is revealed as pretty diabolical.

It was worse than your thinking too. I honestly can’t remember the last game we played well. Last season had a few good halves but considering people still consider our best 11 as the top 3 best 11s in the league we are very average.

I agree H, bringing on an apparently half-fit Victor was a very strange decision, particularly as Sissoko was having a strong game. A live wire like Skipp, or even Dier, from the bench would have been a better option. Same with Lucas, who should surely have been brought on earlier.

Ndombele played better than many pundits gave him credit for, but clearly he is building up his fitness and unable to last a full 90 minutes. Either way the last 20/25 minutes, after the disallowed goal, were badly mismanaged and once again Poch needs to look at his own decision making and the players mental fortitude should be called into question.

Searching for an explanation of Poch’s “in game” (and pre-game and post-game) decisions, which often seem to break schoolboy fundamentals as I remember them. It could come down to something really, really stupid that hardly anyone would credit for someone on 10 million quid a year — but is probably much more common than we know. Don’t know much about this “universal energy” that Poch subscribes to. Has anyone analysed the numerology of the shirt numbers of the players he substituted against Leicester?
