Tottenham Hotspur completed a deal to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting CP in January.
The Premier League club shelled out a fee of around £39.8 million to sign the 23-year-old defender from the Portuguese club and popular pundit Stan Collymore has now branded him as an average player.
Porro has been quite impressive for Sporting Lisbon this season and he showcased his qualities against Tottenham in the UEFA Champions League group stages as well.
The 23-year-old has 3 goals and 11 assists to his name across all competitions and he should prove to be an upgrade on Tottenham’s current right-back options.
However, Collymore feels that the Spaniard is an average player and Tottenham did not have a great January transfer window. It will be interesting to see if the 23-year-old can prove Collymore wrong with his performances in the coming months.
“There are relentless calls for the board to go, Conte’s future is far from secure, their star man Kane is being linked with a move to a rival and they didn’t exactly have a great January transfer window,” Collmore wrote for CaughtOffside.
“Pedro Porro came in from Sporting Lisbon. It’s a great move for him, but he’s an average player that’ll be told to do a job. When you compare that kind of signing to the ones Chelsea are making, sure, it may be unfair to compare any club to them because they’re blowing everyone out of the water at the moment, but even Arsenal’s signing of Trossard – Spurs fans must be pulling their hair out thinking ‘why couldn’t we have got him?’”.
There is no doubt that the defender has the potential to develop into a quality Premier League defender and he has shown his qualities in the Champions League earlier this season.
Apart from his qualities going forward, Porro is a reliable defender as well and he could be a key player for the London club during the second half of the campaign.
The right-back area has been a major weakness for Tottenham this season and Conte will fancy his side’s chances of finishing in the top four and securing Champions League qualification if Porro can sort out the full-back issue and hit the ground running.
