It feels as if the appointment of Ange Postecoglou was less of an optimistic punt, than it was the work of someone who doesn’t quite understand football’s natural pecking order. Just because Colchester United’s gaffer is pulling up trees, it doesn’t immediately follow that he should be considered for the next vacancy at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. does it?!
Stan Collymore is an uncompromising voice in football and his view on the current Tottenham bosses’ demeanour whilst talking to CaughtOffside, linked how Ange acts, pitch side, with his inherent failing as a coach, at this level.
“Spurs’ performance against AZ Alkmaar was a mirror of his demeanour, which is rather miserable. His reactions in the media will be seen by his players, and it has an effect on them, and as a result, I have no doubt that his body language and demeanour contributed to Spurs’ lacklustre performance in Alkmaar.”
Look, if we are honest with each other, Ange does cut a rather isolated character on the sidelines, and as was discussed in this earlier post, here, this was particularly highlighted in the gulf in the optics between him and some other coaches. Unai Emery could be seen leaping around, screaming instructions to players and generally carrying on animatedly, Ange looks like a guy waiting for the last bus home.
Hands in pockets, frequently staring at his feet, it doesn’t feel as if much is happening emotionally. Stan focuses on how unsettled and how inconsistent Sours have become under the Aussie, and the question is, is he wrong, and would the team be improved if he threw himself into it a little more?
Tottenham are rapidly running out of excuses.
