Spurs XI to face Chelsea – graphic

By The Boy -

Antonio Conte’s former side is unbeaten in seven against his current charges, having won 6 and drawn just once.

There’s also Spurs’ form at Stamford Bridge to consider – we’ve won just one of our last 37 trips to Fulham’s second side – managing to scratch up just 12 points from draws. If mental arithmetic isn’t your bag, that leaves 24 losses.

Tottenham arrives this time with a recently earned reputation for scoring goals, on aggregate, Conte’s last 4 games scored 13-1, so might it be that we score our way out of trouble, this afternoon?

So some negatives and some positives
Perisic corners – end of
Richarlison brings something different to the table
Was it Davies on his own trying to defend the James goal everyone else of note was out on the right havent seen us stretched like that since Manure came to town.
Finally I never want to see Son anywhere near any defensive action he is useless at defending (yes I know he is an attacker but Harry is decent at defending).
So put him on his own waiting for a long ball if we win it back.

It’s been a bang average transfer window hyped as something it isn’t, mainly because of the fee we are supposed to have paid Everton for Richarllison. We’ve got some extra depth in certain positions but quality? Perisic possibly but he’s 33 now.

Spence is the one to back up Royal, Lenglet on loan is the central defender we were craving. Looks like we are done transfer wise, while Romero and Kulusevski still aren’t permanent signings. Call that a great transfer window? 🤔

Watching MOTD you have to say our defending for both their goals was positively skool boy.

Tuchel takes after Klopp even in being a crybaby. There were also some doubts about their second goal (foul on Kulu), but he didn’t seem to mind or mention that one.

In terms of quality chances, it was about even, I think. They missed an absolute sitter or two through Havertz, and Sterling went close in our box, while for us, Sess, Son, and Kane all missed decent or even clear-cut chances.

For all their possession dominance and nice midfield play, we could have beaten them on what was a major off-day for us. We played awfully and got a point. A bit smash-and-grab, but not undeserved.

We are short in defence both centrally and on the flanks. Chelsea finished third and invested in quality that went straight into the first team. Reece James and the new Sideshow Bob bloke are both miles ahead of Royal and Sess. Dier is terrible both positionally and in passing out of defence. He and Davies are squad players at best. We have also failed to replace Dembele and upgrade Eriksen. War chest my eye. Levy out.

Our defence was shocking ..second half it fell to bits after we scored ..absolute shambles ..did very well to get the draw looked miles away from CFC generally.

and then we lose AGAIN to Chelsea. I’m counting it as a loss mainly because I can’t stand Daniel Levy and I can’t get over that one summer we didn’t buy anyone!

I also didn’t realise how short Conte is. I looked up his stats on Wyscout and his average reach up to medium to high shelves (in meters) is the lowest of any other manager in the world!

In short. Sack him!

God bless this blog. It’s the only sane place on the internet!

Our bench is deeper, but as we were that bad it had to get better, although we didn’t really play great football when the subs came on. I agree about replacing the deadwood for some much needed quality.

We have a deeper bench now. And if we can somehow swap Tanguy Gio Winks and Regy for 2-4 quality players, we might actually win something.

We should have lost today, we were poor and both our goals were iffy, one of them probably shouldn’t have stood. Regardless of our attitude, we didn’t deserve a point, even Kane has said so.

Si we got some luck, Chavski bossed us in a similar way to last season, let’s face it…

The performance for one hour was the same because the team and the tactics were the same as last year. I don’t know what Conte expected. Our press is abysmal, we let teams out too easily because it is obviously something the players do not practise. If Brentford can do it so should we, especially with team’s obsession with playing out from the back.

I watched the Tuchel interview and I have to say I agreed with everything he said. We got 2 goals we had no business getting, and they completely outplayed us. But we finally have some players who are masters of the dark arts, and we were able to get a point out of this and keep 2 away from Chelsea. Progress.

Yep, I don’t see any of the problems of last season being massively remedied from the transfers we’ve done so far. Which were, a quality and assured central defender and a decent right wing-needed, creativity in midfield also….

It’s one early game, we got away with it but we battled. We lacked quality and cohesion but the attitude was good, and that’s over half the battle. Major improvement needed but mentality wise, all good.

There was zero improvement on last season today, it will be interesting to see if the transfer business makes that much of a tangible difference over the season. It’s still early on and nobody’s really settled into a rhythm. However, the lack of press from us in the first half was kind of typical with Conte. It’s a bit too reactive for my liking and on another day we’re losing this game, looking very second best.

Our midfield was completely outclassed for nearly the whole game, we are going to need to improve, a lot…

Not sure of the little I saw of Perisic, he looked far too slow and his first contribution, a corner, went shin high! He came on and James, who had had 70 minutes under his belt ran past him twice! He either is unfit or just wasn’t up to speed, we’ll see in the coming months. Conte did need to change things earlier. No doubting that.

A proper game of football has just taken place at Stamford Bridge. Referees are letting the nonsense dives and falls go, just like Ronaldo yesterday and Kulu today. If both are stronger the opposition do not score. I am all for this new way, players will just have to be stronger and the conning of the refs will stop.

We were poor today, out thought for nearly one hour and many of us will wonder why Conte did not change things a lot earlier. I always think that teams who press constantly, like Chelsea today, will get tired in the second half and so they cannot sustain it. We luckily stayed in the game. However, this is not a tactic I would endorse. We need to keep the ball better, this comes from buying quality.

The changes that came were welcome, but I think taking Jorghino off was a blessing for us. Richarlison put himself about and won a few tackles but he didn’t change the game with his skill, that is what we are missing at Spurs.

As for the contention in our first goal, Mendy could see Hojbjerg and the ball so Richarlison’s position is irrelevant. I also think Bentancur, who I thought did not disgrace himself (unlike some), made a good tackle on Havertz because he touched the ball. Without that contact it is a foul.

Romero handled the Havertz situation vey well, but he nearly ripped Sideshow Bob’s wig off. He was lucky there. There is letting things go and there is burying your head in the sand. The Kae goal was an Oggie too.

We are definitely a different beast, I loved the fact we didn’t lay down. The Spursy moniker can be binned somewhat after today, although it will rear its head with some muppet in the media later in the year. We battled and got something at a stadium with not too many happy moments. Fair play to the players who finished that game, but some of our lads need to step up. Sess, Davies, Emerson, Hojbjerg (despite the goal and possibly an assist to Kane’s miss), Son and Kane were not really at the races, but was this Conte’s fault? We were run ragged in a system that we have lost to Tuchel on 3 occasions, so it would make sense we would struggle again. I am just glad Kovacic was injured. Onwards and upwards I suppose.

The same weak links as last season were in evidence again today. WBs were both awful. Couldn’t string passes together and we need better than Dier and Davies at CB. Playmaker essential.

JimmyGrievance

Well, it has to be said. As bad as that display was Spurs of the past would’ve definitely lost that game. That’s as positive I can be.

Persic should start as many games as possible. We have to sign a creative MF before the window closes. Conte needs to change things sooner when things clearly ain’t working. We had that nonsense under 70 minutes he’s magic you know.

So what did we learn from that? Royal, Sessegnon, Davies are not good enough. We still do not have quality wingbacks. Maybe Perisic and perhaps Spence but other than that one. We still need another CB who can play the ball forward with accuracy. Hoijberg and Bentancur are too similar as defensive midfielders. We need some creative attacking midfielders. Richarlison does not look anywhere near the value we paid for him. We need another two or three signings that are first-team quality before the window ends.
