Tottenham Hotspur turned down multiple loan offers with an option to buy for their rising star Alfie Devine, as revealed by journalist Alasdair Gold.
Devine, who eventually joined Belgian Pro League side Westerlo on a season-long loan, had attracted interest from several clubs proposing deals that included a purchase clause.
However, Spurs were unwilling to entertain those offers, viewing Devine as an important part of the club’s future.
Gold highlighted that Tottenham’s management insisted on a straight loan deal without any option to buy, reflecting their belief in the 20-year-old’s long-term potential.
The club is confident that Devine can evolve into a crucial player for Spurs in the years ahead, hence their refusal to consider a permanent exit. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the club’s correspondent stated:
“Straight loan, no option to buy. I think some clubs, from what I understand, were putting in bids for him of loan with an option to buy, but Spurs weren’t looking at that because they believe he can be something pretty decent as time goes on.”
Since joining Tottenham from Wigan Athletic in 2020, Devine has shown promise, making history as the youngest player and goalscorer in the club’s history during his senior debut in the FA Cup.
His performances across loan spells at Port Vale and Plymouth Argyle last season further underscored his potential, where he contributed three goals and six assists in 43 appearances.
The decision to loan Devine to Westerlo for the 2024–25 season is seen as a chance for him to continue his development in a competitive league.
Tottenham remain keenly invested in his progress, hopeful that his experience abroad will prepare him for a significant role in the first team upon his return to North London.
