The replacement of Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham is not to be underestimated. We went into the Super Cup final against the Champions of Europe, significantly behind PSG in the betting. The match ended in a 2–2 draw after 90 minutes, with PSG coming back from a 2–0 deficit.

Tottenham scored through Micky van de Ven (39th minute) and Cristian Romero (48th minute), while PSG responded with goals from Lee Kang-in (85th minute) and Gonçalo Ramos (90+4th minute). PSG won the title 4–3 in a penalty shoot-out, with Nuno Mendes scoring the decisive penalty. This marked PSG’s first UEFA Super Cup title, making them the first French club to win the competition.

What fans appreciated was how Frank conducted himself and the thought that went into his in-game strategy. Frank expressed pride in his team’s performance, noting they were “75, 80 minutes perfect” against one of the world’s best teams. He described his game plan as a “special operation” that nearly succeeded, highlighting Tottenham’s adaptability, disciplined defending, and set-piece threat.

However, he acknowledged the fine margins, likening the outcome to a medical operation where “the operation succeeded, but the patient died.”

Despite the loss, Frank remained optimistic, emphasising the team’s ability to compete with top sides and their potential for the upcoming Premier League season, starting with a match against Burnley.

He also confirmed Tottenham’s efforts to strengthen the squad in the transfer market. PSG’s coach, Luis Enrique, admitted his team was fortunate, citing their limited six-day preparation compared to Tottenham’s six weeks.

The game proceeded to a penalty shoot-out, where Tel and teammate Micky van de Ven missed their spot-kicks, contributing to Tottenham’s 4-3 loss. Tel’s penalty went wide, and PSG’s Nuno Mendes scored the decisive kick, securing PSG’s first Super Cup title. Tel had a torrid time of it, despite only featuring for a few minutes, and fans were unhappy, but a minority chose the wrong way to demonstrate their displeasure.

Following the match, Tel faced significant racial abuse on social media, prompting Tottenham to issue a strong statement condemning the “abhorrent” behaviour and vowing to work with authorities and social media platforms to take action against those responsible. The club praised Tel’s bravery for stepping up to take a penalty and expressed full support for him.

Tottenham’s season starts this weekend, and the business of losing a record number of Premier League games feels like a thing of the past!
