Spurs inform player he is free to leave the club this summer say talkSPORT

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to TalkSport, Matt Doherty has been informed by the club that he is free to leave this summer.

This comes as a surprise considering Doherty was in some form under Antonio Conte last season forcing his way into the team and bagging 2 goals and 3 assists in 6 apps. He then picked up an injury against Aston Villa in April which saw his season come to an end, unfortunately.

And given that Spurs have been really chasing to sign Djed Spence all summer, it looks like Spurs have decided to sacrifice the Irishman as the wing back that will make way for him, leaving Spence and Emerson Royal as their right wing back options.

Conte signed Emerson Royal only last season from Barcelona and if they sign Djed Spence this summer, he’ll have two young players who he can shape into the sort of player he wants.

Tottenham seems to be turning its attention towards offloading players now after a crazy spending spree in the early part of the summer transfer window, with the likes of Bergwijn, Joe Rodon, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso all linked with moves away.

If Doherty is going to be sold, Wolves should really look to re-sign him. He would fit right back in and boost Bruno Lage’s team instantly.

Doherty had that one game where he made 2 Pirlo quality through balls – something Emerson can only dream of let’s not forget.

Keep Doherty; loan Royal; sign Spence made sense.

Selling Doherty suggests to me that Spurs could be going after Gordon too. Could Spence be signed and loaned too I wonder?

Or maybe the Traore rumours will be gathering pace again……

I will let you know this evening. I am joining the panel and have my flat cap ready and my script about how I hate England (but support an English club) and I love potatoes.

Him and Royale can do one as far as I’m concerned, bring in Spence and drop £40-50m on someone more senior.

Been saying it for a long time now, but this RWB role is so critical to the way we play under Conte I can’t believe we’re not looking to drop some serious wedge on it. Would be a huge waste to go into the season with Spence and one of these other 2 herberts.

Your article is mis-informing if I am remembering correctly here, Conte did not sign Emerson Royal, the defender was already at Spurs when Conte joined a couple of months into the season. Personally I thought Doherty had improved quite significantly under the Italian manager, until his injury sidelined him that is. As for Emerson for me his fitness wasn’t in question but his ability and performances were well below expectations, and I just do not see him as a decent fit for Tottenham going forward. I’d like to see Spurs sign Spence but also think we need someone strong, capable and experienced in this role

Of the two, I honestly believe that Royal will improve, is fitter, not as injury prone & Royal has been getting a lot of interest in Europe [Roma, Atletico etc].
Also I can’t forget that 10 -13 pass beautiful Son goal near the end of the season that Royal Kulu were involved in at the start in the defence third.
That told me Royal has improved from the start of the season.
He’s the better investment long term.

Maybe if Doherty had not got injured after being in good form & continued to the end of the season the same, decision might have been more difficult for Antonio.

Yup, get rid, Gooner, injury prone, not much difference in quality between him and Royal who has the years on his side. Unpredictably disastrous signing this one.

When you think about it , has Matt Doherty actually added or subtracted from the squad ? In my minds eye I see him shuffling over the half way line largely unsure of what he will do in possession , the occasional cross [ over/under hit ] but a head down kinda guy .
I just honestly believe that he is at a level below those of top 6 – top 10 in the Prem . Whoever actually signed him is NOT someone I’d trust again , I have an awful feeling that Djed Spence is in that ‘envelope’ , time will tell and in Antonio I trust ………………….. C O Y S !!!!!!!
