Spurs hero claims Postecoglou told him his Tottenham career is over

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham’s legendary goalkeeper Hugo Lloris left from the club last December, concluding a remarkable decade-long career in North London.

The former Spurs captain has now joined MLS side Los Angeles FC for the 2024 season, with an option to extend for an additional two years.

During his time at the Lilywhites, Lloris made an impressive 444 appearances across all competitions and maintained 151 clean sheets.

Following the arrival of Ange Postecoglou as the Tottenham manager last summer, Lloris did not feature for the club over the next six months before eventually parting ways.

Recently, the 37-year-old opened up about his departure, revealing that he felt pushed out after a conversation with Postecoglou. Despite the lack of inclusion in the squad, the former French international continued training and remained professional throughout.

In an interview with Le Parisien, Lloris reflected on the decisive conversation in August 2023. During this discussion, Postecoglou made it clear that Lloris would no longer be part of his plans and would only serve as a training player. Lloris commented on the situation:

“Tottenham were coming to the end of a cycle, and so was I. I knew that Tottenham wanted to recruit younger players, especially in my position.

“Summer was approaching and I was no longer part of the plans.

“When the championship resumed, in August 2023, the coach informed me that I would no longer enter the field, that I would only be a training player. I was pushed aside, I had become transparent.”

Despite the disappointment, Lloris handled the situation with professionalism, demonstrating his commitment and maturity. This approach did not go unnoticed by Postecoglou, who later praised Lloris for his exemplary behaviour during the transition period.

Tottenham replaced Lloris by acquiring Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli, who quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, and has enjoyed a remarkable debut campaign in North London.

Lloris’ departure marks the end of an era for Spurs, but his legacy remains, highlighted by his professionalism and significant contributions to the club over the years.
