Spurs could offload summer signing in January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Djed Spence from Middlesbrough during summer transfer window.

Reports have claimed that the London club have parted with a sum of around £20 million for the talented young full back.

However, the youngster has not been able to establish himself as a regular starter for Antonio Conte so far. There have been suggestions that the player was not Conte’s preferred transfer target and he was more of a future investment from the club.

The 22-year-old is yet to start a game for his new club.

Spence showcased his quality in the Championship with Nottingham Forest last season and he will be hoping to play regularly in the Premier League now. However, the likes of Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty are both ahead of him in the pecking order and it seems that Spence might have to leave in search of first-team action.

Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has claimed that the young defender might need to leave on a loan deal when the transfer window reopens in January.

Hutton also added that the transfer has not gone according to plan for the talented young defender and it remains to be seen whether Spence can force his way into Conte’s first team plans between now and January.

Hutton said to Football Insider: “It is a weird one. When Spence signed, I thought he was a great talent. He was brilliant at Nottingham Forest. I thought he was ready for the Premier League.

“But then you hear Antonio Conte coming out and saying it was not his signing, it was a club signing and one for the future.

“It has not gone to plan for Spence which is a shame because he has ability. If this continues towards January he is going to have to look to get out on loan and play. He is too good to sit on the bench.

“You do not want that to effect him moving forward. He will want to be playing week in, week out. If that means going out on loan and coming back a better player so be it.”
