Ange Postecoglou has outlined the importance of Wednesday’s EFL Cup win over Manchester City for one particular Tottenham Hotspur player.
Goals from Timo Werner and Pape Sarr in the opening 25 minutes helped seal a 2-1 victory for the Lilywhites, who made sure Matheus Nunes’ strike just before half-time was merely a consolation.
Spurs have now drawn Manchester United at home in the quarter-finals as they look to end their long-running trophy drought.
This result can hopefully act as a springboard for Tottenham, who have lost two of their last three Premier League matches.
But for one player, in particular, Wednesday should act as a springboard.
Man City goal the start of a Timo Werner revival?
That player is Timo Werner.
The German forward has endured a torrid time since returning to Spurs on loan from RB Leipzig in the summer.
Prior to Wednesday, Werner failed to score in his first 11 appearances of the campaign across all competitions. In Premier League play, he’s attempted five shots and missed two big chances without scoring.
But Werner emphatically opened the scoring inside five minutes against Man City, blasting home a perfect Dejan Kulusevski pass first-time as if he were in peak form.
Postecoglou sang the praises of the 28-year-old after the match, hoping this can kick him on to better things.
“Great move for the first one and great for Timo to finish as he has been going through a tough time,” Postecoglou told reporters (via Football.London).
“With the attacking players, it kind of weighs on them when they don’t score or don’t sort of finish stuff off. For him to score tonight and in an important moment of the game was great and hopefully that sort of helps him kick on.”
